Objective
To present students with concepts and reflections contemplating production systems as thermodynamic
units and allow them to obtain a minimum critical sense regarding available energy sources,
environmental assessments based on energy concepts and their interaction in agribusiness.
Content
1) Energy and the human species. Natural Production x Production Systems. Demand for food, fiber and
energy. Intensification of agricultural production systems. 2) Concepts and reflections: laws of
thermodynamics, sustainability, energy origin, environment, analysis scale. 3) Mechanization as a key
element of agricultural sustainability. Material and energy flows. 4) Agriculture as a source of bioenergy.
5) Energy and its non-energy issues: economics and politics.
