Criteria for selection of scholarship recipients

Scholarship from CAPES and CNPq are available to PPG-CAP master and doctoral students on a competitive basis and upon (mandatory) application, given that the number of available scholarships are usually smaller than the demand. Applications for scholarships must turned at PPG-CAP’s office, filling up specific form and corresponding documentation requested. Selection is carried out independently for master and doctoral students, as follows:

Master of Science students

Step 1-Evaluation of academic performance

• Students regularly enrolled who still do not hold scholarships – will be selected based on student transcript, Janus System. Average coefficient of academic performance (CRA) will be estimated as follows: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, pondered by the number of credits in each discipline. Students receiving any R concept and/or CRA < 3.30 are ineligible for scholarship. Average CRA will be pondered by 1.5 factor yielding a maximum of 6 total points at this step.

• ​Students filling first enrolment at PPG-CAP – will be selected based on the “dirty” undergraduate transcript (containing all the ‘passing’ and ‘failing’ grades of the student), scored as follows:

- general average between 8.0 and 10.0 = 4 points
- general average between 7.0 and 7.9 = 3 points
- general average between 6.0 and 6.9 = 2 points
- general average between 5.0 and 5.9 = 1 point

For each failing grade writes off 0.2 point from the student’s general average; maximum number of points possible is 4.

Step 2 - Evaluation of student participation in research during undergraduate

• Participation in junior researcher program (IC):

- students with no curricular IC engagement - zero point
- students with curricular IC engagement, but no official funding agency scholarship – points (1.5) will be awarded only to IC students who register at least one abstract published as first author
- students with curricular IC engagement and recipient of scholarship from official funding agency - 3 points

• Publication (only publications adherent to the area of Animal Science and Pastures will be considered)

- events’ proceedings – up to 1.0 point, 0.2 point per published unit up to a maximum of 5 published works
- refereed journals – up to 2.0 points, 1.0 point for manuscript up to a maximum of 2

Note: journals and proceedings of events are classified as high, medium, and low relevance for the PPG-CAP and the number of points of each publication are pondered by relevance of publishing vehicle

The total maximum points at this evaluation step is 6.

Students are ranked based on the total points earned in steps 1 and 2 above (maximum possible = 12 points). Scholarships are granted according to students ranking - highest to lowest - until exhaustion of the number of available scholarships. Ranking will be kept in effect throughout for the semester to grant scholarships made available by defenses of master’s theses and doctoral dissertations or extra mural funds granted to PPG-CAP or accredited faculty by funding agencies.

The power of each selection process ends with the registration of the next student class and a new evaluation and ranking will take place. Students who still are not scholarship recipients shall enter the new evaluation and ranking process.

Outstanding academic performance is required for continuing of scholarship, that is, scholarship recipients shall keep an accumulated CRA average ≥ 3.30 and 100% approval in all class work.

Doctoral students

Step 1 – Evaluation of academic performance

Step 2 – Publications

• papers submitted for publication in refereed journals: up to 1.0 point, 0.25 point per manuscript up to a maximum of 4 manuscripts
• papers accepted for publication in refereed journals: up to 2.0 points, 1.0 point per paper up to a maximum of 2
• articles published in refereed journals: up to 3.0 points, 1.0 point per paper up to a maximum of 3
